HEAD & NECK
CANCER TREATMENT

Lymphatic and soft tissue complications of head and neck cancer are very common throughout the first 24 months post-treatment, with greater than 90% of patients experiencing some form of internal, external, or combined lymphedema, and over half of those patients developing fibrosis.

Radiation fibrosis syndrome is an insidious pathologic fibrotic tissue sclerosis that often occurs in response to radiation exposure.

Common side effects of the head and neck cancer treatment protocols may include:
• Dysphagia (swallowing issues)
• Xerostomia (dry mouth)
• Dysgeusia (bad taste in mouth)
• Dysosmia (smell disorder)
• Lymphedema
• Trismus (restricted jaw movement)
• Dysarthria (speech disorder)
• Dysphonia (voice impairment)
• Aphonia (loss of voice)
• Cervical Dystonia (restricted neck movement)
• Cervicalgia (neck pain)
• Psychosocial Distress
• Fatigue
• Shoulder Syndrome (neuropathy, scapular dyskinesia, myofascial pain, adhesive capsulitis, rotator cuff impingement, muscle deconditioning)
